Dr. Beverly Mathis presently serves as Vice President Early Learning, Literacy, and Family Engagement, formerly known as, Clark County READS for The Public Education Foundation. Through this service, Beverly facilitates collaborations between Clark County School District and Literacy Services on behalf of The Public Education Foundation.

Dr. Mathis served in the Clark County School District (CCSD) as an Elementary School Principal at Kermit Roosevelt Booker, Sr. Empowerment Elementary School, Las Vegas, Nevada for sixteen years.  As the Principal and Chief Administrator of a Pre-K through fifth grade school, her primary responsibility was instructional leadership.  Dr. Mathis promoted the mission and commitments of the Superintendent’s Region so that all students had equal access to participate in and benefit from excellent educational opportunities.  Before Dr. Mathis’ position as Principal, she served as an elementary Assistant Principal for three years and a kindergarten through eighth grade teacher for sixteen years in the Clark County School District.  Dr. Mathis’ first two years of teaching began in the State of Tennessee.  Dr. Mathis served as Adjunct Faculty at Nova Southeastern University from 2001 through 2013.  From 2014, through the present, Dr. Mathis serves as Adjunct Faculty at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Beverly’s career related memorable experiences include one of five panelist selected for the Forum for Working Women with then, first Lady Hilary Rodham Clinton in 1996.

 

Dr. Mathis serves as an active member of the School-Community Partnership Program Advisory Council; Presently Chairs the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency; and serves on the Superintendent’s Education Advisory Council.  Dr. Mathis holds membership with the Clark County Association of Elementary Principals, National Association of Elementary School Principals, NAACP member, Second Baptist Church’s, Church Clerk; Sunday School Cooperative teacher, and an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Las Vegas Alumnae Chapter serving as Chairman of Education Development.

 

Awards and honors include:   the Seventeenth  Grand Marshall of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade (98), Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Leadership in Education Award (99), District D Citizen of the month, (Dec. 99),  recipient of the 2000 Milken Family Foundation Education Award, NAACP Education award 2000, “Service To Youth” award 2001 from the Links Inc., The Distinguished Women of Southern Nevada Award 1999 and 2000, Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Shelley Berkley for “Outstanding Achievement and Major Academic Growth and Improvement in 2000 as the First Annual Award for improvements in Nevada’s First Congressional District.  Dr. Mathis was the recipient of the 2004 Don Barden’s Education Achievement Award.  She was also recognized as the Education recipient of the 2005 Caucus of African American Nevadans.  In 2005, Beverly was the honoree for Education by the 100 Black Men.  Dr. Mathis received the 2007 Education/Community Award from the Ministries and Wives, Widows Organization, and was honored for her Educational Leadership on January 20, 2008 by the City of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services’ Diversity Team and the

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.  Dr. Mathis is excited and humbled for being selected as a 2009 honoree by the Las Vegas Alumni Chapter of KAPPA ALPHA PSI  Fraternity Incorporated.  November 17, 2009, Dr. Mathis was inducted into the Clark County School District’s Excellence in Education Hall of Fame that recognizes extraordinary and unique commitment to educational excellence.  February, 2010, Dr. Beverly Mathis was selected for a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Las Vegas.  “Mathis was chosen for her incredible drive and passion in improving the lives of children who attends her school.”  The Nevada Association Of School Boards (NASB) selected Dr. Beverly Mathis as the recipient of the 2010 School Administrator of the Year Award. In 2015, Dr. Mathis was honored by The Public Education Foundation with a Life Time Achievement Award in Education. In 2015, Governor Brian Sandoval appointed Beverly to Nevada’s Spending and Government Efficiency Commission (SAGE) for K-12 public education.  In 2016, the City Council reappointed Dr. Mathis as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency.  This appointment is effective for a term of office expiring on November 2, 2019.  The most recent honor has been the naming of the Dr. Beverly Sue Mathis Elementary School, slated to open August 2017.

 

Beverly Mathis is celebrating 40 years of marriage to Raymond Mathis who is a retired Clark County School District Administrator.  Raymond and Beverly are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters Dr. Tya Raenise Mathis-Coleman (Deputy Treasurer, College Savings & Executive Director Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship) and Ashley Rae Mathis (Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management at Ursuline Academy in Dallas, Texas). Both girls are Nevada Millennium Scholars.  Beverly’s hobbies include reading, bowling, and promoting positive family values in the home, school, and the community.
